Rochester-Area Hospitals Facing $38 Million Budget Cuts

Rochester-Area Hospitals Facing $38 Million Budget Cuts

Rochester-area hospitals are facing $38.8 million in budget cuts over two years under the Governor's amended budget proposal.

"These cuts are unacceptable," said Travis Heider, President and CEO of Pandion Healthcare: Education & Advocacy. "Our hospitals cannot sustain cuts of this magnitude. Hospitals and healthcare systems are the #1 and #2 employers in the Rochester area - these cuts would have a devastating impact on the availability of healthcare services, and ultimately, healthcare employees could lose their jobs. Pandion's hospitals will be strongly opposing these cuts when we travel to Albany next week."

The governor proposed a $1.1 billion cut to New York hospitals in his 30-day amendments to the executive budget proposal. HANYS and GNYHA recently released a study on how it would impact local hospitals over the next two years. For example:

  • Strong Memorial Hospital would lose $21.4 million
  • Rochester General Hospital would lose $6 million
  • Highland Hospital would lose $3.3 million
  • Unity Hospital would lose $2.5 million

"I strongly urge our local legislators to reinstate the funding because cutting healthcare is the wrong approach," Heider said.
