Emmanuel Fombu, MD, MBA

Dr Fombu is a recognized authority on the convergence of digital technologies and healthcare. He is an author, physician and medical futurist with over 15 years combined experience in clinical medicine, drug development,  digital medicine, BD&L, pragmatic trials and product lifecycle management strategy in the healthcare industry and private equity.

His current focus is on how digital technologies can be leveraged to better measure healthcare related product’s real world effectiveness and value, and also to design more comprehensive disease management systems in partnership with digital health startups, payers and providers.   

In addition to his book, The Future of Healthcare: Human and Machine Partnering for Better Outcomes, Dr. Fombu has authored multiple research papers and abstracts in renowned peer reviewed journals. As a medical futurist and 2017 winner of the prestigious New York City Health Business Leaders Boldest Digital Health Influencer Award, Dr Fombu is a champion and advocate for value based healthcare, personalized medicine, mhealth, nanotechnology, big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning and digital medicine. He serves as an external advisory board member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s MIT.nano project.

Dr Fombu did his clinical training at Emory-Crawford Long Hospital and holds an MBA from both Cornell University’s Johnson School of Business and Queen’s University’s Smith School of Business. He also earned a certification in Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy from MIT’s Sloan school of management and Computer Science Artificial Intelligence Lab. He lives in New York City.

Michael Hasselberg, PhD, RN

Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Nursing at the University of Rochester

Michael J. Hasselberg, PhD, is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Nursing at the University of Rochester. Dr. Hasselberg received his PhD degree in Health Practice Research in 2013. Dr. Hasselberg is also a graduate of The Academy for Healthcare Leadership Advancement through the Healthcare Association of New York State and the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. He is a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, and is the Director of UR Medicine Telepsychiatry Program, and the UR Project ECHO. He has been recently been appointed the behavioral health lead for the UR Medicine Health Lab. The Health Lab is a multidisciplinary collaboration between the University of Rochester Medical Center and the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, that brings together clinicians, researchers, computer and data scientists, and engineers from across the University to build new technologies and systems that leverage cloud-based computing and analytics, multifunction sensors, 3D imaging and modeling, point of care diagnostics, machine learning, and virtual and augmented reality technologies to navigate and overcome the challenges in medicine. Dr. Hasselberg has a special interest in leveraging technology to deliver high quality, evidence-based care to adults with mental health conditions and the transformation of health care delivery systems from volume to value.

Nicholas Conn, PhD

Prior to founding Heart Health Intelligence, Nicholas Conn completed his PhD in Microsystems Engineering in 2016 at RIT, where he developed the technology being commercialized by HHI – a toilet seat-based cardiovascular monitoring system. He also holds a BS (2011) and MS (2013) in Electrical Engineering from RIT.

Dr. Robert Mayo

Robert Mayo, MD

Robert R. Mayo, MD, leads the design, integration, and implementation of multiple leadership teams, clinical departments and patient safety and regulatory functions as Chief Medical Officer at Rochester Regional Health.  He also provides leadership modeling and mentoring for leaders and oversees a robust Physician Advisor Program.

Dr. Mayo served as Chief Medical Officer at Rochester General Hospital and moved into his current position when Rochester Regional Health formed in 2014 with the merger of Rochester General Hospital and Unity Hospital. Before that, Dr. Mayo co-lead the launch of the Rochester General Health System Patient Safety Institute, that governs and implements vital regulatory, performance improvement, infection prevention, medication safety and patient safety activities.  Among the accomplishments of the Institute thus far are a 50 percent reduction in mortality and more than $1 million in savings after the implementation of Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Programs. Dr. Mayo also still practices as a clinical nephrologist. He practiced in Michigan and Virginia before starting his tenure in Rochester in 2002.

Dr. Mayo is a member of the New York State Medical Society, Monroe County Medical Society and the American Association of Physician Leaders. He also serves on the United Way of Rochester Board of Directors.

Dr.Mayo earned his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor.  He is a native of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Ramchandran

Rajeev S. Ramchandran, MD, MBA

Dr. Ramchandran provides surgical and medical care to patients in the Rochester area as well as throughout the Finger Lakes Region and Western New York. 

Dr. Ramchandran is a native of Pittsford, NY where he attended Pittsford Sutherland High School. He left Rochester to study at the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, majoring in Biology and South Asia Regional Studies. He then completed his medical degree, with distinction in research, at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and went on to an ophthalmology residency at Duke University. He recently returned to Rochester where he completed a Vitreoretinal Fellowship at the Flaum Eye Institute in July, 2009. Dr. Ramchandran is licensed in the state of New York and certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retinal Specialists and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Dr. Ramchandran performs retinal surgeries, laser therapy, intravitreal injections as well as medical retina. His other interests include health policy and economics, telemedicine and international ophthalmology. 

Dr. Ramchandran sees patients at the University of Rochester Flaum Eye Institute offices. The office is located at 210 Crittenden Boulevard.

"Cybersecurity – What to do in Case of a Breach"

Dan Bowen

VP and CISO, Sentara Healthcare

Mr. Bowden oversees information security for Sentara Healthcare's 12 hospitals and 28,000 team members. He also works with universities to develop the next generation of cybersecurity experts and has experience with cybersecurity solutions for the cloud as well as digital platforms.

He is a lead author of the Department of Health and Human Services’ publication for the compliance with Section 405(d) of the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2015, which published the Healthcare Industry Cybersecurity Program guidelines in January of this year.

In conjunction with MEDGRUP CYBER, Dan is actively developing joint venture and business opportunities in health cyber security and blockchain technology to provide solutions to healthcare providers throughout the United States. Additional areas of professional and academic focus include digital strategies, cloud computing, population health, healthcare analytics, data governance, global and homeland security.

Prior to Sentara, Dan has been an organizational leader in cybersecurity and technology for healthcare, higher education, banking, retail (American Stores Company), and the military (USAF) for over 25 years. He held CISO and senior-level cybersecurity operations and technology roles for the University of Utah Healthcare and Zions Bancorporation. Dan has a M.S. in Administration of Justice and Security with a concentration on Global and Homeland Security, and B.S. in Business Administration.

Mike Pinch

Michael Pinch is an experienced healthcare technology executive, currently the Chief Information Security Officer for the University of Rochester Medical Center. Prior to that, he was the Chief Technology Officer for Palladian Health where he led development of real-time clinical decision support and utilization management systems. Prior to Palladian, Pinch worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers, performing a variety of IT Security, project management, and compliance related services at several Fortune 500 companies. Mike holds several certifications (CISA, CISM, PMP, CGEIT, TCAD) and has published and presented regularly on topics relating to IT management, cloud computing, and security throughout the region.

Pinch is an adjunct professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology Saunders Graduate School of Business, as well as a faculty member with IANS. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Union College, an MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology with concentrations in Technology Management, as well as an MS in Computer Security and Information Assurance, also from RIT.

As HANYS’ director of healthcare information technology, Thomas Hallisey formulates and executes HANYS’ state and federal HIT regulatory and legislative advocacy agenda. This includes working with government agencies, lawmakers and other organizations to advance HANYS’ HIT agenda on behalf of New York’s hospitals and health systems.

Tom’s career includes extensive HIT work in the hospital setting, beginning as an application analyst at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Connecticut, and then working at several hospitals in New York state. He served as director of information services at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, then as vice president, information management/chief information officer at Cortland Regional Medical Center in Cortland. Next, he joined Menusguide.com, a startup company, as chief technology officer and served as CIO for United Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Most recently, he was executive IT adviser and CIO at Hartman Executive advisers, an IT consulting firm.

Tom received his undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut, has an ITIL v.3 Foundation Certification and is an Affiliate of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and the Healthcare Information Management Systems.

Michalene Kinsler is an experienced leader with over 25 years in healthcare and business.  She began her career at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital (now New York Presbyterian) in their engineering department working to improve efficiency through innovative project design. She continued with several years at Oxford Health Plans in Darien, Connecticut working in provider relations and project management during their period of rapid growth.  This was followed by fifteen years of clinical practice as an evidence-based chiropractor in Rochester, NY.

Jean Bauch

Jean Bauch is Information Systems Manager for Rochester Regional Health continuing care departments, with a focus on workflow optimization and process improvement.  She has a clinical background in diabetes care and education, and experience with care management, home care and long term care settings.

Before entering the world of information systems, Jean developed a nationally-recognized diabetes education program, and directed a rapidly-expanding endocrinology practice with 40 team members.  She started a 14 practice ambulatory Care Management program to coordinate care between hospital, social work, home care and specialty practices.  Jean was also instrumental in the implementation of an HIE within a large health care system with disparate electronic medical records. She collaborated with cross-departmental clinical teams to develop work flows that utilized HIE data to improve quality indicators, reduce length of stay, and avoid readmissions.

With a Bachelor’s in Nutrition and Health Sciences from Rochester Institute of Technology and Master’s work at University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Information Systems, Jean’s educational background provides a solid basis for innovating health care process improvement through information applications.

Dr. Carnovale holds the rank of Assistant Professor of Supply Chain Management at the Saunders College of Business at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Prior to joining RIT, Dr. Carnovale was Nike Professor of Supply Chain Management at Portland State University from Sept. 2014 to June 2018. Dr. Carnovale is a supply chain strategist and econometrician specializing in interfirm networks, risk management and global sourcing/production networks with a specific focus on equity-based partnerships. His research has appeared in the Journal of Supply Chain Management, the Journal of Business Logistics, the Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management, the European Journal of Operational Research and Annals of Operations Research among others. Dr. Carnovale earned his B.S. and PhD degrees at Rutgers University, specializing in Supply Chain Management and Marketing Sciences. Dr. Carnovale is a frequent speaker at both academic and professional supply chain meetings on topics related to supply networks & analytics, with a specific focus on how firms can use these concepts to generate enhanced visibility and financial performance within their supply chains and extended enterprises. Prior to his academic work he co-founded a marketing strategy and consulting firm, worked in sales and operations management roles in the IT sector, as well as in market research and marketing analytics roles.

Kenny has extensive experience working in healthcare supply chain as well as in fiscal, operations, and technology healthcare advisory services. Kenny is a veteran speaker and has presented nationally at the IDN Conference and Reverse Expo, AHRMM (Association for Health Care Resource and Materials Management), Premier’s Annual Breakthroughs Conference, the OR Business Manager Conference, and local ARHMM chapters as well as with Modern Healthcare. He was also a primary contributor to the Nexera book The Healthcare Supply Chain: Best Practices for Operating at the Intersection of Cost, Quality, and Outcomes. Karen’s primary responsibility is managing the clinical process within the Performance Groups line of business. This is an ongoing process of identifying and articulating market requirements that define a product category’s attributes. As a clinical expert she uses her understanding and medical expertise to analyze current and future market technology trends while prioritizing customer needs. In addition Karen’s responsibilities also include assisting the clinical work groups for all Performance Groups as well as working with members and suppliers to identify and develop strategies to introduce new technology and improve product utilization.

Prior to joining Premier, Karen has more than 33 years of nursing experience in the PeriOperative Services area to include circulating, working in PACU and management of all areas in the PeriOperative arena.  Her management duties included capital equipment acquisitions, total joint implant management, physician preference product ordering, daily oversight of the Department of Anesthesia, and responsibility for over 50 OR’s 12 Endoscopy procedure rooms and all Pre-op and Post-op departments.
